Elvin the Electric Vehicle ELVIN stands for Electric Vehicle with Interactive Noise and it is a utility vehicle which is used around the University of Warwick campus of patrol the car parks. Electric vehicles are really quiet and the lack of sound has been identified as a safety issue. Tests are now being carried out at the University of Warwick by fitting the vehicles with the NoViSim's sound system to find out of drivers' and other road users reactions.

Smaller And More Efficient Nuclear Battery Created

Batteries can power anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient. “To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density,” said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope battery can provide power density that is six orders of magnitude higher than chemical batteries.” Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, currently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro/nanoelectromechanical systems (M/NEMS). VW unveils New Passat

Volkswagen has unveiled the new Passat BlueMotion at the Geneva Motor Show. The car is said to be the most fuel-efficient production Passat to date and has a combined consumption of 67.3 mpg for the saloon, while CO2 emissions are expected to be just 109 g/km (114 g/km for Passat Estate). The car is powered by a 1.6-litre 105 PS common rail TDI engine with manual six-speed gearbox and with the 70-litre fuel tank capacity, the Passat BlueMotion has a theoretical range of 1,035 miles. The car comes standard with Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems. High tech features available as options include the fatigue detection system, city emergency braking function, Park Assist II, High Beam Assist and Easy Open boot. The new Passat is due to go on sale in the UK in June and the first models are expected to arrive in August. Prices will be announced later.
