BASF builds production facility for electric vehicle batteries

BASF today broke ground on a $50+ million facility in Elyria, Ohio, to produce advanced cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries that will power the hybrid and full-electric vehicles of the near future. The event attracted a number of federal, state and local officials, as well as representatives of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), its affiliated Argonne National Laboratory, and numerous BASF employees from Ohio and other parts of the company's global manufacturing and research and development operations. "This new facility will put BASF and the state of Ohio at the leading edge of the North American cathode materials market," said Frank Bozich, President of BASF's Catalysts division and member of BASF Corporation's North American Executive Committee. "As the world's leading chemical company, BASF has the ability to make advanced cathode materials widely available as next generation lithium-ion battery production begins to ramp up in facilities thr...

Koenigsegg to buy Saab and make Quant Electric car

SAAB Automobile is to be sold to Swedish sports car maker Koenigsegg. US automaker General Motors has signed a tentative agreement with Koenigsegg to sell its beleaguered unit, GM said in a statement on Tuesday. Koenigsegg, founded in 1994 by Swedish businessman Christian von Koenigsegg, has just 45 employees and produces 18 Super cars a year for more than a €1 million ($1.4 million) each. Saab Automobile employs about 3,400 people in Sweden and sold 93,000 cars worldwide in 2008. Reports from Swedish news service Realtid say that Koenigsegg is eager to get their electric concept supercar, called the Quant - which develops 512 hp (382 Kw) and 715 Nm through its twin electric motors - into production, and the company views Saab’s knowledge and facilities as the key. Developed in partnership with Swedish company NLV Solar AG, specialists in photo voltaics and electrical power technology, the Quant was launched at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year with wild claims of previously u...

Asian Manufacturers Will Lead the $8 Billion Market for Electric Vehicle Batteries, Says Pike Research

The next five years will see rapid advances in advanced battery technology, as dozens of manufacturers position themselves to meet the anticipated demands of newly electrified vehicles being launched by nearly every major global automotive company. Despite the support of the federal government, U.S. battery companies have struggled to gain market share while the Asian market for vehicle batteries has taken off. Asian manufacturers, which have traditionally dominated the global market for lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries in various electronics categories, will continue to lead in both Li-ion production and consumption as the global market for electrified vehicles grows rapidly over the next several years, according to a recent report from Pike Research. “The Obama administration is making a concerted effort to prevent the failure of the U.S. auto industry, and that will bolster development of the U.S. battery industry through 2012,” says senior analyst John Gartner. “But political shifts ...
